Unlike NFTs, Ordinals on Bitcoin are directly inscribed onto satoshis, allowing both the images and metadata to live on the blockchain indefinitely. A satoshi, which is the smallest unit of Bitcoin, is the perfect host for this type of data. Despite being worth just one hundred millionth the price of a Bitcoin, inscribed satoshis, or ordinals, have been sold for tens of thousands of dollars since their inception in January 2023.
